Furmination
German Shepherds, as wonderful and intelligent as (most of them) are, are also known for one thing above all others - their amazing ability to not only blow their entire coats twice a year, but also the fact that they shed year around. Let's just say that they are nicknamed German Shedders for a reason.
Because of this, much discussion on the dog forum I go to centers around how to deal with all of the hair: from good vacuums to pick up the superfluous coats from the floor to the best tools for removing loose fur from the dog. And one device kept coming up frequently - a deshedding tool called the Furminator.
Okay, I've actually heard of the Furminator before and even seen the company website, which boosts that it gets rid of the shedding and gets tons of loose fur off your dog. But quite frankly, I thought that, like so many seen-on-TV gadgets, it was just that - a gadget designed to make lots of money that did little of what it promised to do.
My interest was peaked, however, when a new thread about the Furminator recently showed up on the dog forum and where everyone on there who owned one absolutely recommended it as the best thing ever. I value those people's opinions because they do have the shedding problem just like I do, they have good advice in general, and they're not paid to advertise the product. I thought maybe it was time to give the Furminator a try.
Let me say, they're not cheap. I got a Medium size Furminator, which has a blade you can replace (always a plus) for the cheap price of $31 from Amazon. For the size and style I bought, $31 is a very good deal, especially since it included free Super Saver shipping, and was cheaper than many of the ones sold on eBay.
Of course I tried it out as soon as the package arrived yesterday, and didn't take any photos of the process. But even going over Abby the second time, the Furminator still picked up enough loose hair to make a toupee that would cover a cat and a half. Anyone need a hair transplant for their cat? I've got assorted colors right here!
BEFORE (before second time, that is)
AFTER - notice the huge pile of hair in front of her!

Hello there Abby, my name's Poseidon, I just got my own blog, and I've been reading your blog with great interest! Mama went right to the web and checked out that furminator thingy, she says it sounds great. She just got me a "zoom groom" last weekend and I love it! It feels sooooo good! But that furminator thingy looks like it'll work way way better.
We're moving to Northern VA, and have been back and forth from there to MI almost every week. I'm gonna miss my acre sized backyard here in MI, but mama and daddy keep saying something about the old job here "laying him off" or something and about him having a better job down there. I don't know if I like it in Virginia or not though, we don't have a yard there and it's a lot hotter than I'm used to! I will say that I've not been getting the attention I deserve the past week cuz mama's been so busy packing and painting and cleaning and stuff. Oh well, she says it's time for bed, and I happen to agree! This blogging stuff is wearing me out!
Hey Abby,
maybe your human could make a cushion for you stuffed with your very own shredded hair.
Or would that be just gross?
Anyway, you're lookin' good, girl!
Chow for now,
Tin Tin xo
